Shrewsbury Town secured their place in the second round of the Carabao Cup with a penalty shootout victory at Salford. The match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, with Salop winning 4-3 on penalties following a series of outstanding saves from goalkeeper Will Brook.
How the match unfolded
Shrewsbury's manager opted for a 3-4-1-2 formation for the competitive opener. Will Brook started in goal with Sam Stubbs, Will Boyle and Josh Ruffels forming the back three. Arkell Jude-Boyd was at right wing-back and Kevin Berkoe on the left, with Will Gray and Tom Sang in midfield. Isaac Fletcher played in the number 10 role, supporting front two George Lloyd and Josh Davison.
Salford created an early chance when Luke Molyneux forced Brook into a save inside the opening minute. However, Shrewsbury controlled the early exchanges, pressing aggressively and using possession effectively.
Just before the half-hour mark, Isaac Fletcher drove from the left and found Tom Sang in the box, only for the midfielder's curled effort to drift just past the far post. After the restart, Shrewsbury took the lead when Fletcher forced Salford goalkeeper Norris into a save, and Josh Davison emphatically finished from the loose ball to mark his Town debut with a goal.
Salford levelled when Kyrell Malcolm scored, but Shrewsbury continued to create chances. The hosts had to make last-ditch blocks to keep out efforts from Lloyd and Gray. With 15 minutes remaining, Sam Stubbs was sent off for a second yellow card in what manager Cowan felt was a harsh decision.
