Shrewsbury Town will host a Remembrance Match against Gillingham on October 31 to honour armed forces past and present. The fixture is the club's closest home game before Remembrance Sunday, which falls on November 8 this year.
A series of tributes will take place ahead of kick-off. Wreaths will be laid pitchside by Mrs Anna Turner, His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire; Wing Commander Paddy Durnin, Station Commander at RAF Shawbury; and representatives from both Shrewsbury Town and Gillingham.
The ceremony will include a rendition of the Last Post, followed by a one-minute silence that will begin and end on the referee's whistle. Players from both sides will wear poppy armbands during the fixture.
Club and Council Backing
Shrewsbury Town Chief Executive Liam Dooley said the club is "incredibly proud to host our annual Remembrance Match and to provide an opportunity for our supporters, players and staff to come together to honour the men and women who have served our country."
Councillor Gary Groves, Armed Forces Covenant champion at Shropshire Council, praised the event's attendance and the club's commitment. He said serving personnel and veterans appreciate the event and that "it means a great deal to the Armed Forces community that their sacrifice is recognised in such a way."
Further details and timings for the Remembrance Match will be confirmed in due course.
