A Shrewsbury woman has joined television presenter Hamza Yassin to bury a time capsule marking The Camping and Caravanning Club's 125th anniversary.
Helen Marsh was one of three competition winners invited to the ceremony at the Club's Clent Hills campsite in Worcestershire.
The time capsule contains objects intended to show future campers what the organisation and outdoor holidays were like in its anniversary year. It has been buried beside a commemorative plaque and a newly planted crab apple tree.
Shrewsbury camper's anniversary pledge
Helen secured her place at the event through the Club's anniversary pledge competition. Members were asked to make a promise connected with camping and the outdoors as part of the 125th-anniversary celebrations.
Her winning pledge was to use camping to connect more closely with nature, with friends and family, and with herself.
"My pledge was based around the three aspects of connection: connect with nature, connect with friends and family, and connect with yourself," Helen said.
She added that she was delighted to win and enjoyed meeting the other competition winners at Clent Hills.
Helen, who owns a Mazda Bongo campervan, attended the event with her friend Diana Peltier-Brown.
Hamza Yassin helps mark 125 years
Wildlife cameraman and television presenter Hamza Yassin took part in the ceremony in his role as president of The Camping and Caravanning Club.
"Camping has a wonderful way of bringing people together," he said.
Yassin said the capsule represented the organisation's past while also looking ahead to future generations of campers.
The burial formed part of a year-long programme marking the Club's 125th anniversary. The organisation traces its roots to 1901, when six men met at the home of outdoor pioneer Thomas Hiram Holding and founded the Association of Cycle Campers.
The Club says Clent Hills has a direct connection with Holding, who camped in the area before the organisation was established. The site was therefore selected as the permanent home for the capsule.
What is inside the time capsule?
The collection includes a booklet recording anniversary pledges made by members, staff and supporters during 2026.
It also contains Club publications and memorabilia, a 2026 membership card, items of staff uniform and a copy of Two Shillings a Day, a book about the organisation's early history.
Organisers said the contents were chosen to leave a record of the Club's community, traditions and day-to-day life during its anniversary year.
A plaque now identifies the burial point, while the crab apple tree is intended to provide a living marker as the site develops.
The Camping and Caravanning Club's published history confirms that Yassin is its current president and that 2026 marks its 125th anniversary. More information about the organisation and its history is available on the Club's website.
The story and photograph were supplied by The Camping and Caravanning Club through its communications team. Local Gazette independently checked the Club's anniversary, history and presidency details.
